How to join

Bishop’s Stortford S.C is affiliated to the A.S.A East Region.  We aim to cater for the widest possible range of swimmers, e.g. from Learn to Swim to Adult Social Swimmers, with a structure that will produce competitive swimmers at all levels – National, Regional, County and Club.  We compete in the Herts Major League, Herts Peanuts League, Junior Swimming League and The National Arena Swimming League.

If you're interested in joining  the answers to following questions may help you.

My child would like to try out for competitive swimming...

Every year many children join the club from our swim school and other local schools. We hold regular trials to assess swimmers for membership of the club. For more information regarding the time and dates of assessments please contact the Rookies Squad Coach Amy Gardner

What standard of swimming are the coaches looking for in swimmers joining Rookies?

New swimmers who would like to trial for Rookies will be able to swim and demonstrate a good technique in:

50m freestyle

50m backstroke

50m breaststroke

Be able to swim 25m butterfly (minimum 15m with good dolphin leg kick)

Be able to dive from side or block

Be able to do a basic forward roll at the wall

I am already swimming competitively and would like to join the club

In the first instance you should contact the membership secretary Jenny Raphy who will direct you to the appropriate squad coach. It would be a good idea to have details of your PB’s to hand in order to assist in determining your current level

As a new swimmer, you will be assessed by one of the Bishops Stortford Swimming Club competitive squad coaches, depending upon availability. After a short in-water assessment of your swimming ability, you may be invited to join the squad best suited to your level of ability, as decided upon by the assessing coach. This is of course, being subject to space in that squad.

As a master looking to join the club will I have to be assessed?

No, As a master you can apply to join the club without assessment, you may wish to contact our Masters Coach Stuart Clarke who can provide you with further information. It may well be that you are returning after a break from swimming and need to work back into it. In such cases our Adults Squad could be a good starting point.

I have been offered a squad place what do I do now?

Go to the Membership forms section where you can download the relevant forms.

Ensure that you also send your ASA Forms with you paperwork. These can be obtained from any of the squad coaches or membership secretrary. As they are ASA forms we are unable to upload them to the site.

You will be given a start date when all your  membership forms and fee are handed in. This will normally be one week after  receipt of payment and forms to ensure that you are covered by the club's ASA  insurance.
